RRFC Takes Bayside To The Wire

Saturday, September 24th - The Richmond Rugby Football Club followed their season opening loss on the road against Kelowna with two games at home, beginning with an exhibition game against a young United side. After the Tri-cities visitors ran in 5 unanswered tries, the 2XV Blacks responded with tries from Taran Dhesi, Tim Ross, Lucas Paczek and Joe Dimayuga to produce a much tighter scoreline in the second half. Albeit, a final well worked try by UNited combined with a penalty try at the buzzer gave United the 40-22 win in the early game.

Kudos to the always eager Dimayuga for his man-of-the-match performance and to new RRFCer Danny Chang who played admirably on the wing. Also a special thank you to referee Lance Davison for stepping up and taking the game on short notice.

The 1XV faced Bayside in the feature game at 2:30 in front a large and boisterous home crowd. Kudos to the set-up crew, the concession crew headed by Heidi Woods and the Alumni who turned up on the RRFC's 2016 Homecoming game! Also kudos to match-day sponsors Cavu Kitchen and Chef Alex Hancock.

An encouraging first couple of minutes aside, Richmond produced another disappointing opening quarter identical to that of last weekends' loss to Kelowna. Fly half Lachlan Kerr slotted a second minute penalty only for the RRFC to find themselves stuck in their own half for the next 30 minutes. Unable to deal with Bayside's big ball carriers who dished offload after offload, Richmond were soon 17-3 behind.

It was prop-cum-centre Lance Davison who got the red and blacks their first try early in the second half. Sustained forward pressure on the Bayside line paired with quick hands from the backs saw Davison stroll in from five metres out. Try converted and Richmond now trailed by just 12.

Richmond had fully wrested the game back under control by this point. Theyno longer looked a team trailing by almost 20 points. The team defiant despite the scoreline as they pushed to try and close the gap further. However each period of sustained pressure was frustratingly released by another poor showing in the set piece or knock ons as the ball was moved wide. Scrum half Arnold Lam bagged the second try carrying two defenders across the line with him. A sharp dart down the blindside was rewarded with five points after numerous phases just short of the Bayside goalposts.

A brief lapse in concentration allowed Bayside a fourth and bonus point try 15 minutes from the close. While realistically sealing the defeat, this only seemed to galvanise the team in red and they dug deep to produce another well-worked team try to give themselves a sniff. Running from deep, six players got their hands on the ball and kept it alive for Kerr to touch down in the left hand corner. The conversion to follow was missed but it gave enough time for a restart. Richmond received the ball from the kickoff and after a couple of phases that showed promise, a knock on rounded out a consecutive disappointing weekend, two winnable games with only a losing bonus point to show for. A final score of 27-23 to Bayside.  Plenty to work on ahead of travelling to Langley for two games this weekend at Crush Crescent.

Men of the Match were Greg Palin and Lance Davison. LInk to the 1XV game footage is here - thanks to Videographer Lindsay Kerr!
