Richmond Tops Langley

Saturday, February 27th - The Richmond Rugby Football Club finally got the result they were looking for in the first division after a see-saw battle with long-time rivals Langley Rugby Club at King George Park on Saturday. A rousing bonus point home victory sent the 200+ spectators in attendance home happy for the first time in 2016!

The match saw some inspiring play from captain Mike Marquardt who scored two tries and ran well in the centres - earning this scribe's player of the game nod - but it was the steady boot of first Cameron Knowles, and then Andrew "Tats" McIntyre that sealed the victory for the red and black!

Langley, wearing their sharp-looking white tops with green stripes, answered an early Richmond try with one of their own shortly thereafter, to set the tone for the theme of the day - Richmond points followed by Langley points followed by Richmond points followed by...

McIntyre, playing at outside centre, was a revelation in the backs - prompting a possible permanent position change next time coach Ben Hickey sets the lineups. Scoring 12 points (1 T, 2 C, 1 P), McIntyre linked up several times with back-rowers Geoff Girling and Lucas Paczek in space to give the LRC defenders fits. Lendl Magispoc - playing hook and then prop against a large Langley front row - also put in a worthy and notable first half performance.

Langley's kickers were very accurate on the day, forcing Richmond to keep active in loose play and try and tally points from allover the field to keep pace. Langley nailed four penalties - including one while down two men early in the first half - which kept them in the game. Richmond's undisciplined second half culminated in Brian "The Squirrel" McGrath negating a promising first half (a try and several devestating hits from the #9 position) with a yellow card for a nasty tip-tackle at the side of a ruck mid-way through the second stanza.

But Richmond battled back from being down a man with second half tries by Brandon Sims and Anton Metalnikov, capped off by a McIntrye penalty from distance to give the home-side the bonus point win in front of an enthusiastic west-hill crowd.

For the first time in several weeks the rains held off and the both the first and second div games were played in "sunshine" or at least over-cast skies. Speaking of the second division game - the 2XV Blacks were unable to match the heroics of their first division counterparts, although a front-row heavy lineup (Mafatow, Dimayuga, Davison, Steele, Hagong, Dhesi, Bancroft and Stewart all played various positions around the park) was able to match the LRC 2XV try for try, until the final minutes of the game. Newcomer Myles Merola put in work at the #7 spot, while the return of Taran Dhesi, Josh Stewart and Sunny Haer to the club's ranks helped the boys rise to the occasion. Tries by Lance "Warhorse" Davison (2), rookie "scrum-half" Sam Hagong, Ryan Steele (looking svelt at inside centre) and Dhesi (who was man of the match in his first game in six months) and a convert by Davison totalled 27 points. Sadly, Langley was able to rattle off six tries of their own, plus four converts and a penalty goal to win 41 - 27.

Next week the lads travel to Abbotsford to take on the well-rested ARFC at Exhibition Park. Men of the match were Hagong and Dhesi in the opening game and Lendl Magispoc and Brian McGrath in the first division match!

Thanks to new post-match sponsors The River Club and to Heidi Woods for running a busy and boisterous concession! Until next time! Onwards, Upwards, the RRFC!
