Reds Draw Langley On The Road

October 1st, 2016 - In dreary conditions, Richmond rolled into the Township of Langley short on players but high on confidence. A different warm up and a new defensive system had the team coming out the gate much sharper than in previous weeks. Good line speed and first up tackling contained Langley and their big pack initially found it hard to gain any momentum.

A few penalties due to poor discipline was all Richmond could have lamented in the opening quarter. They defended with aggression, used possession to gain territory and dealt with the rainy conditions better than their opposition. A smart inside break found scrum half Brian McGrath in support. He was hauled down five metres from the line and Langley were penalised for holding on. A quick tap saw Jon Findlay cross to the left of the uprights. The conversion to follow had Richmond up by seven at half time.

The home side came out with a much clearer game plan in the second half and utilized their giant pack to much better effect. Taking advantage of the slope of the field and keeping the ball in tight, they kept Richmond penned in their own half for much of the next 20 minutes. The pressure told eventually, an 8-man pick off the back of the scrum saw Langley crash over and draw level. The green and gold were firmly flexing their muscles now. Dismantling Richmond in the scrum and disrupting their line out, they did not allow the visitors to leave their own half for long periods at a time.

Langley's second try came as no surprise due to the field position. Silly penalties were adding up and Richmond were down to 14 men after Josh Stewart was penalised. Stewart, making perhaps his first and only appearance as a winger, made one of the tackles on the season - the only drawback was his opposite number was nowhere near the ball.

Down seven points with only a few minutes remaining, Richmond were back to even numbers as Langley's No. 8 was shown a yellow for a high tackle. Finally it was the red and black camped on their opponents try line absolutely gunning for that match saving score. The scrum patched itself up and provided a platform for Brandon Sims to bounce off a couple of tackles and ground the ball. A straightforward conversion followed and Richmond safely received the ball off the restart. Quick hands set the backs free and they looked to win the game from within their own 22. A knock on out wide brought down the curtains on a brilliantly fought game.

The end result: a deserved draw that left both teams disappointed but happy to break their respective losing streaks. A bye for all teams next weekend for Thanksgiving before Richmond take on the newly promoted Brit-Lions on the 15th of October.
