Juniors Celebrate Succesful Season

Wednesday December 9th - The Richmond Rugby Football Club spent the evening gathering together the members of the club's U-16 and U-18 junior programs for the annual first-half awards night. Feasting on the spread provided by Boston Pizza, the junior players celebrated a succesful 2015. Richmond's U-16s, while only playing a handful of games had an up and down season, with the team improving each week, culminating in splitting a pair of games with the Surrey Beavers on the final day of the season. RRFC Junior Head Coach Al Smith congratulated team MVP Jericho Kaus (Burnett Breakers) and Most Improved Player JJ Bachmeier (MacNeill Ravens) and looked forward to January when the U-16s will continue their season with practices and a limited slate of games.

The club also congratulated the Richmond U-18 team on their 2015 accomplishments. The U-18 boys were able to win the Tier-2 title with a win over the Rowers-Meralomas, progressing to the Tier-1 playoffs as a result. After some losses to strong teams from the valley and island, the boys were able to finish eighth in the province. This was a noteworthy accomplishment as the team was almost entirely comprised of 17 year old players. The coaching staff (Al Smith, Blair Knowles, Geoff Girling) look forward to 2016 when they will return nearly all of the starting squad for a second year of U-18 rugby. The top forward for the U-18s was Jason Kaus (McMath Wildcats) while top back was awarded to Connor Wilkinson (McMath Wildcats) who were both solid contributors to the team throughout the fall season. The majorty of the players will now turn their attention to the Spring school season - as McMath, Cambie, McNair and McRoberts are all expected to have teams competing in various Lower Mainland leagues.

All in all, a good Fall season for the club's younger members -  a big thank you to the Richmond coaches as well as Marvin Foss and the Langley players who joined up with the Richmond players for a second straight year. The partnership between the two clubs has been beneficial to both sides as players from past U-18 teams are suiting up for both Langley and Richmond squads in the Lower Mainland men's leagues.

Thanks to Boston Pizza for the great hosting job and to all of the parents and supporters who came out to the games and cheered on the boys rain or shine! That's it until for this season - the club looks forward to seeing both the U-16s and U-18s progressing in 2016!
