Beavers Soak RRFC

Saturday, December 5th - Richmond's final games of the half were played at home on what can only be described as poor playing conditions, and although the field held up, Richmond's attack and defence did not. The opponents on the day were the Surrey Beavers, who graciously allowed for the game times to be flipped so that the first division game could be played at 1:00 PM instead of the usual 2:30 PM. It seemed as though the earlier kick-off time did not help the hosts in the slightest, as a fairly strong crowd (considering the weather) were treated to a resounding Richmond loss. The RRFC opened the scoring on a Mike Marquardt try (his seventh of the season - see picture below) but it was all downhill from that point. Surrey is big around the fringes and Richmond's game plan seemed to be to try and attack the bigger, beefier sides of the rucks with pick and go's and tight ball back inside. As any physicist will tell you, this is not a sound strategy when the other team has more mass than you do - likely something will give! Richmond seemed to get worn out as the game progressed allowing a few cheeky tallies on defence, while being stopped time and again by the Beaver pack and inside backs on offence. Despite the size-differential, the scrummaging was good though some injuries to prop Hayden Malcolm and back-rower Geoff Girling tested the team's resolve during the early stages. Furthermore, the team's discipline was poor as Richmond received its fourth red card of the season when Pen Drikibau was sent off mid-way through the second half. These things will happen when a team is frustrated, and while the score-line at half (27-5) did not change during the second forty minutes, Richmond was certainly dissatisfied with their play to end the pre-Christmas slate. Men of the match were Mike Marquardt and Doug Embury who both played large roles in the improved defensive structure in the second half. Richmond's firsts end an up-and-down first half with three wins and six losses, but there's hope on the horizon as injuries and work schedules will bring reinforcements for January. The firsts will start their season again on January 23rd against an opponent to be named later!

The second division game, with its new start time allowing for some of the players to sleep in for an extra hour, got off to a cold, windy start. Both teams had put together patch-work sides to get the game off, and it was Surrey who came out stronger, notching their first win of the campaign for their Second XV. Surrey had some pacey outside backs, and were able to capitalize on a Richmond sin-bin which resulted in two long, break away tries for the Beavers. Richmond had no answer, and as the game progressed, Surrey was able to tack on a few more tries to Richmond's single tally - final score was 23 - 7 for the Beavers. Bright spots for Richmond included the play of James Tracey (who appeared to have found - and likely bathed in - the fountain of youth!) and Kyle Rolfe who punished Surrey tacklers from the back of the scrum all day. Men of the match were Ehrich Falkenhagen and Lindsay Kerr with captain Lance Davison also putting in a noteworthy performance. The club also welcomed U-20s Sam Hagong and Brandon Howell into the fold and both youngsters played admirably. Richmond's seconds finish the first half with four wins and two losses and will start the season off against the Meralomas in a second-division-only-showdown on January 16th at Connaught!

Kudos to the referees as well as to Surrey's U-20s who knocked off Burnaby Lake in the U-20 semi-final! Post-match, a reasonable amount of pizza and beer were consumed at the Legion as the boys swapped stories and made new pals deep into the evening. That's it for game reports until 2016. To all of our fans, families, players, management, volunteers and coaches have a Merry Christmas (or Chanukkah!) and a Happy New Year. Onwards and Upwards! The RRFC!
